Navigating Change: Career Growth and Leadership Lessons in Energy

Megan Pearl, VP of Technology at Locus Bioenergy, shares her journey from a turbulent childhood to scientific leadership in oil and gas. Growing up with instability and early responsibility after moving in with her father at age nine, Megan developed discipline and perfectionism, skills she later balanced to prevent burnout. Originally aiming for science writing, a high school teacher’s encouragement led her to chemistry, and eventually a PhD focused on forensic science and marine phytoplankton classification. A chance recruitment by Halliburton—alongside her husband—launched her into the oil and gas industry, where she faced steep cultural and professional learning curves, especially during their assignment in Brazil. Transitioning from scientist to leader, Megan embraced humility, constantly asked questions to grow, and leaned into her unique perspective.

After perceiving gender-based barriers to promotion at Halliburton, and encouraged by her persistent husband, she joined Locus Bioenergy as Director of Technology during a challenging phase of motherhood. Megan now oversees technology across three business units while expecting her fourth child, exemplifying resilience and adaptability. She candidly reflects on overcoming being underestimated, the importance of composure, leveraging expertise, and relying on mentorship and advocacy. Her key message: women must own their career paths, embrace empowerment despite external doubt, and recognize that moments of being doubted can be powerful, transformative experiences
