From Political Science to Global Manufacturing: The Power of Reinvention

Jacob Bunn, Chief Commercial Officer at UTEX Industries, never imagined he’d build a career in oil and gas. Growing up in the small town of Brownwood, Texas, as a first-generation college graduate, he studied political science with no clear roadmap for the future. His career began in drilling, where years of operational and commercial experience gave him a front-row seat to one of the industry’s most demanding sectors. But Jacob’s defining characteristic has never been following a predetermined path—it’s been recognizing opportunity when it appears. A chance conversation at a gym inspired him to pursue an MBA at SMU, not because he needed another credential, but because he wanted to prove to himself that he was capable of more. That decision ultimately reshaped his career, opening doors through relationships, networking, and an entirely new perspective on leadership.

Today, Jacob leads global commercial operations for UTEX Industries, overseeing customers across North America, Europe, and Asia. UTEX engineers advanced elastomer and thermoplastic sealing solutions that support oil and gas, water infrastructure, mining, and other industries operating in the world’s harshest environments. His role extends far beyond sales—it’s about understanding customer challenges, building global teams, and helping position engineering as a competitive advantage. Throughout the conversation, Jacob shares how curiosity, adaptability, and continuous learning have allowed him to transition across industries while remaining grounded in the same core principle: great leadership starts with solving problems for people. He also discusses balancing executive leadership with family life, why saying “no” is an important leadership skill, and the importance of stepping back to see the bigger picture before reacting.
